Free Range Yarn

This is the free range yarn. On my daily schedule, I have some sessions set aside to tidy the workspace. It can be a most productive 12 mnutes 34 seconds. The last time around, the yarn was all over the sofa – no one could sit down – and more scattered than it is here. So, I gathered it all up.

There is plenty in there to show you. The yarns to replace the fiber of my best seller hat. There are two of them. There are new yarns for prayer shawls and for some new items I have in mind for the new shop. New shop, you say? YES! Whole bunch of new going round here.

I have something on the hook that is really going to be cute and you will see it in due time. It is not my design and I haven’t even modified it yet. I’m doing it in a yarn and color I’ve used a lot but it will still look great.

The free range yarn is going to stay there for a bit because there is no place else to put it. I am hoping I won’t need to get to the domesticated yarn in the closet because that would be a pain to get to. I’m working on one final order and I have all the yarn on the back of the sofa. So, we should be good.

Keep Track of Your Yarn Stash

Learning to keep track of your yarn stash is something of an artform. It’s easy if you’re one of those organized folks.

I’m not.

Mr. Honey walked in, looked inside, saw the bags tossed in and decided it would not do. He did his thing and in less than a day, I had a system to put my bins and bags away in an orderly fashion.  The top shelf has the smaller bins across. I think there are eight of them up there. The three big bins in the middle and then there are 16 of the huge storage bags. .

I almost wish I could say that was all of it but there are 4 of the gray bins and 10 of the smaller bins that are in the studio and various bags of free range yarn.

Luckily for me, I had packed the bags by brand. The bins are just packed and it’s always a nice surprise when I have to go in there. Believe it or not, when I need a particular yarn, I have a pretty good idea if it’s in a bag or a bin and which bin it can be found. But I don’t always know how much of it I have. There have been times when I needed a full skein only to discover I have half a skein or less.

Formally organizing my stash makes sense for my Etsy shop and my business expenses.

I have more than one way to keep track of my stash. My most used way is in an Excel worksheet when I create an item. I keep track of the Company and Name, color, how much I use, how much it costs, where I got it. I also track it it’s still available and an applicable sub. This comes in very handy when needing to purchase for a specific project.

Generally, to keep track of what I have, I use the Stash Inventory Tracker. I’m not one of those who can just dump the stash in the middle of the room then sort it. It’s too overwhelming. But I can set aside an hour or maybe two during the week and take a bin or a bag and sort it.

I use the form online (the printable is free, for the fillable online version, purchase it here for $1.50)

The tracker holds all the info and includes a spot to place a yarn sample. On the fillable version, I add a link to the website where it’s purchased.

I prefer to keep my own inventory as opposed to putting it on an app or a site. It’s fewer clicks and not as distracting. And I don’t have to worry about the site crashing or the app growing obselete.

If you have tips on keeping track of the stash, by all means, share them. Feel free to download the form or purchase the printable/fillable and happy sorting!

    Year of Yarning Dangerously

it is early July; even so, this is the beginning of the year of yarning dangerously.

For the past several years, I’ve watched countless YouTube videos of yarn unboxings. Boxes of yarn being opened from all sorts of companies and I’ve even done one or two myself. This has led me to believe that there are some people out there who think the only way to be a true knitter or crocheter is to constantly buy yarn – even if you have no idea of what to do with it.

I admit I started growing my stash before I ever saw one of those videos and they only made me realize I was not alone in my yarn obsession. Not only was I not alone, I was a freakin’ amateur compared to some of those folks. Think I’m kidding? Here are the results of my yarn unboxing Google search.

I have nearly $5K worth of yarn in my stash. Some yarns have been there for ten years or more. During a recent move, I rediscovered yarns I forgot I had. Now mind you, I cannot yet honestly say, I have more than enough yarn. I still look at yarn websites. In fact, I look at them so much that if those email con artists said they saw me watching yarn sites instead of porn sites, they’d probably have my bitcoins by now.

You see the yarns in the photo? I’m not sure I’ve used any of it. There might be one or two but for the most part, It’s back in the Santa bag and it’s hanging out with the free range yarn. I’ve done yarn reviews on the yarns I’ve worked with this year; haven’t even scratched the surface. I don’t have the containers or the room to put the free range yarn somewhere. That’s when it hit me I need to go on hiatus. My yarn studio in the condo is 30% bigger than my old one in the house. Granted, there is more in this studio than the other one but not more room for the yarn.

The old studio had two small desks and two bookcases. There wasn’ even room to knit. The new studio has a full on table two bookscases (one that holds 10 bins of yarn) a dresser, a tv, a queen size sleeper sofa, a mini fridge and two side tables. There are also four huge bins of yarn and the free range yarn. The closet, which is twice as big as the old one, is filled with ten big bins and sixteen huge storage bags of yarn.

So, there is enough yarn – not too much because an order could come in and I may not have what I need. But there is enough.

I am betting there is enough to discover and learn about the yarn I already have. I am betting there will be some tempting times but I will resist them. Indeed, I already have.

Hang out with me for the next year and see what stash shopping uncovers for me. During this time, there will be some yarn organization, some planning time and knit and design time. Maybe I’ll even save a little bit of money!

    In My Knitted Dreams

It’s June and this is the month my knitted dreams go a little wild. I purchase yarn twice a year (except when I need it for a specific order.) My last yarn haul was December, and I was looking forward to Herrschners sale this year. I contacted them a few months ago and they said they hadn’t decided what to do with their sale and they just put some stuff on clearance on their site. I’ve been eyeing the Ice Yarns, Paintbox and other sites looking over the fibers I want to have in my stash. I know very well most of what I buy will linger with the masses in the stash – the skeins I pulled last night have been there for 3 – 10 years. Their patience is being rewarded by sitting on my table and possibly finding their way to my needles.

The yarns I pulled? Cascade Eco. The yarn continues but the color does not. And it is rare for me to have 100% wool but I have it and I think I have it in a brown color, too.

I Love This Yarn Sugarwheel in Gelatto’s My Motto. Hobby Lobby as a company has not been a favorite lately but I have a ton of their yarn and it makes me happy so I am going to use it even though it is likely I won’t be shopping there again. I imagine the Ice Yarn Cake Blues will sub just fine. That’s also why there is no link to the yarn

Barcelona by Loops and Threads. Sold exclusively at Michaels. This is a very lush and soft acrylic yarn.

Caron Big Cakes in Blueberry Torte. This is one of my favorites because it’s beautiful, soft and I get a lot of bang for the buck.

Finally, another Loops and Threads. This is Impeccable. This is their basic worsted weight yarn. I like it in a pinch for wearables but I am not making a wearable with this one.

What am I making? I will tell you in My Knitted Dreams, part 2.

    Discontinued Yarns

I am having a love affair with discontinued yarns. With the last collection, I used three: Hayfield Colour Rich Chunky which is no longer available at all. But there are several other Hayfield Chunky yarns out there. Just none with the colorway this one had. I also used to Caron Big Cakes with discontinued colors. There are still Big Cakes but the colors I used are no longer. I still have some of each color but not enough to keep me from missing them. They are gone from me. Sigh.

I mean, look at that color. It’s gorgeous even in a picture that doesn’t do it justice.I have about 16 balls of Hayfield in various colors (I had to look up the orders, there’s some I don’t even remember) running around in the free range. I’ve seen a couple of this color called Strata and I’ve seen the brown one, which I don’t recall the name of. Apparently, there are as many as five different colors running around. I am going to have a pleasant surprise one day when I run across them.

It took me a while to realize yarns were discontinued. It didn’t occur to me until it happened after I opened my Etsy shop and there was a hat that very popular.I went to the store to pick up the yarn and it was no longer there and the clerk said it was discontinued. I had to scramble to come up with another color. Luckily, it was just as popular but I live in dread that one day, that color too, will go away.

The closest yarn I have found to the Hayfield is Premier Puzzle yarn. It knits up very nicely as well and has a very nice color run. It’s nice to the touch and will feel good against the skin. See? Isn’t it pretty? But while I also have a few balls of this in different colors in the free range, it knows, as I know, it’s a substitute. It’s an unfair thing to know you are the replacement for discontinued yarns. It must cause stress.

The best solution is to love the one you’re with because it can all come to an end. Not the healthiest way to run a relationship but one must protect the heart. And nothing breaks the heart than a yarn that is no longer available. But we must knit. So we must go on.

    Taking a Dive

I found myself taking a dive into my yarn stash. Remember I mentioned the yarn that is allowed in the living room and then the yarn that makes it to the chair. This is the yarn that made it to the chair.

There are some discontinued yarn – I miss the Hatfield Chunky. There are colors I didn’t know I would ever have. Can you say hello pink? Of the yarns I see clearly, I haven’t used any of them and I am on item 4/10. I also decided to use the same fiber for 4 that I used in 3.

It was fun picking this month’s elite yarns. I can purchase more yarn til December. That can be a pain the arse when there are so many good sales but discipline is nothing if it’s not used so taking a dive in the stash has to suffice.

There are some yarns that didn’t make the cut that are putting up a little fuss, but they are appeased with my idea for what they will be.

I help them see themselves as mittens and fingerless gloves. They like the idea. I like it when yarn and I can live in peace.
