How Deep is Your Love?

How deep is your love?

Crocheted Prayer shawls from designbcb

I mean your love for all things fiber? I ask because I want to know if Rhinebeck is still a thing? I’ve never gone to Rhinebeck and I know it had its annual event last month but I’ve never been more than mildly curious about and it and certainly not enough to look into going.

But, of course it pops up on my feed every October and this time around, it got me to thinking: Is Rhinebeck still a thing? It was about twenty years ago when I was getting more into yarn and what I could do with it and what it could do for me.

Looking on YouTube, it seems it’s doing just fine. Should I be interested in going? Am I a ‘real’ knitter if I don’t ooohhh and aaahhh over hand dyed yarns and multicolored sweaters? I hope not. I think not. One, I don’t make a lot of sweater. I enjoy making kid sweaters. I’ve made two adult sweaters in my life and I can gladly never make another one. Right up there with socks. Hand dyed yarns are lovely. I don’t use them a lot because one of the things I want when I create something is affordability. Because I’m cheap. I have some hand dyed stuff but not a lot. Rhinebeck is the Sheep and Wool Festival so naturally it is full of sheep and wool. Pretty to look at I’m sure but if I can’t buy enough to make a couple of something, then it just makes me mad. I rarely frequent yarn shops unless they have a really nice clearance section.

I try to attend a local Crochet-a-Thon twice a year. It’s a few hours and there’s dozens of crocheters (and some knitters) it’s for a great cause and it’s fun and it’s about as much as I can handle. What I appreciate about Rhinebeck is the party atmosphere and the camaraderie. It would make me nervous unless I knew one or two people already. Small talk does me in; even if it’s about yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks. I appreciate people who can love the craft in different ways and I appreciate those of us who stay swaddled and safe in our lairs watching the fun from afar in eyes other than ours.

I doubt I ever have the urge (or nerve) to go to something like Rhinebeck but more knitting power to those of you who go and have a great time. Pet a sheep for me.
